  1. Just a note, Benjamin Bowmaneer may refer to the Hundred years war or possibly to a later war such as the Civil War. The instruments and style of the music however would not have been out of place for the 14th and 15th centuries. The language is modern English and not Middle English which points to the late 15th or 16th centuries. The earliest attestation is around 1670, but it may have been much older, or adapted from a middle English version. The Cantiga is one of the 420 or so from the Cantigas de Santa Maria by Alphonso X, King of Castile who died in 1284. This music was courtly music for the next couple of centuries and certainly during the time of the hundred years war.

Thanks for the extra info Geoff. I will still claim Benjamin Bowmaneer as 100 yrs war as it is a great song and I want it. Historical revisionism is everywhere!
